Continuous Availability for Business-Critical Servers
NEC's Express5800/ft series of servers provide an
innovative solution to address planned and unplanned
downtime for mission critical IT infrastructures.
Through full system redundancy, NEC's Fault Tolerant
(FT) servers leverage the Intel® server architecture
to achieve continuous availability, which delivers
unprecedented system integrity, transparent failover,
and a low total cost of ownership (TCO).
99.999+% System
Uptime
The unique dual-modular hardware architecture is
comprised of redundant subsystems executing all
processing in lockstep to virtually eliminate any
single point of failure and safeguard data-integrity.
This hardware fault tolerant provides a "5-9's"
environment for Windows® and Linux applications.
The redundant components operate
in lockstep and process the same instructions
at the same time. In the event of a component
failure, there is no interruption of processing,
data loss or performance degradation. Even
the RAM state is preserved as the system automatically
fails over to the redundant module.
Servicing the system is as simple as replacing
the faulty module while the server remains on-line
and running at full capacity.
These fault tolerant servers go beyond eliminating
downtime caused by component failures by addressing
the downtime required to perform patching and
software upgrades. A new feature called Active
Upgrade enables non-stop server operation
while performing software maintenance that often
removes other servers from operation for several
hours
Reduced Total Cost of Ownership
NEC's fault tolerant series of servers deliver a
substantial reduction in the overall total cost
of ownership by avoiding costly downtime, and reducing
the time and cost required for a full IT staff to
achieve high availability.
Continuous processing is achieved in the event
of a server hardware failure through the full
redundancy. The system will continue to operate
even while the required parts are replaced to
establish full redundancy again.
Through NEC's Fault Tolerant architecture,
sophisticated clustering techniques can be avoided,
providing substantial operational savings and
simplicity. Additionally, faulty components
are isolated by the system at the module level,
which simplifies the troubleshooting process.
Clients can replace the faulty modules at a
more convenient time that minimizes manpower
expense, while avoiding the time delay associated
with authorized service technician maintenance.
Full support of standard operating systems
from Microsoft and Red Hat ensures compatibility
with standard applications. Cluster-aware applications
can also operate on NEC's Fault Tolerant system
without requiring customization, which saves
valuable IT programming and administrative resources.
Only a single logical copy
of software is required on the NEC Express5800
series of servers, since redundancy is achieved
at the hardware level. As a result, savings
are achieved on software licensing fees for
operating systems and other popular applications.
Customers implementing Red Hat Linux Enterprise
Edition 4.0.4 operating system will benefit
from standard L1, L2 support directly from NEC,
as well as fully tested subscription updates
directly from Red Hat.

Performance
Suitable for Server Consolidation and Virtualization
NEC's fourth-generation Express5800/320Fc Fault
Tolerant (FT) series of servers deliver lockstep
support for the low voltage Quad-Core Intel Xeon
processor 5300 series. This offers more than a 200%
performance gain over current Dual-Core models.

"Intel
and NEC continue a long collaboration in delivering
high availability
systems to the market," said Kirk
Skaugen, vice president of Intel's Digital
Enterprise Group and general manager of the
Server Platforms Group.
"The new generation of NEC ft servers
offer enterprises new levels of
availability and reliability with the record
performance and energy efficiency
of the Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor
5300 Series."
The Express5800/320Fc
series of servers provide the highest availability
for mission critical applications, and effectively
support the emergence of server consolidation
and virtualization workloads.
Additional enhanced features of the NEC Express5800/320Fc
FT server include support for the fastest
